Richard Bentley, last of the Bentley family of English publishers, conducted the family business for five years. In 1898, Bentley dissolved the firm and made over its stock and assets to MacMillan and Company. Bentley then became active in a range of professional, literary and charitable organizations including; The Royal Literary Fund, The Royal Meteorological Society and The Worshipful Company of Stationers. The Bentley family was a prominent nineteenth-century British publishing family. Richard Bentley (1794-1871) joined his brother Samuel Bentley in a successful printing business in 1819. From 1829 to 1832, Richard partnered with publisher Henry Colburn to form Colburn & Bentley. Richard Bentley was a London publisher, first with Colburn and Bentley, later with Bentley and Sons. Bentley published many of England's most popular writers, including Dickens, Thackeray, Wilkie Collins, Marie Corelli, and Mrs. Henry Wood.
